There's Something About Dumbledore

Cecilia to Clever Daughter: Dumbledore is gay! I'm not kidding you!

Clever Daughter to Cecilia: I have to say I'm shocked, but he did wear those amazingly stylish glasses and long robes all the time...

No wonder Dumbledore was so insightful. YAY for Dumbledore. YAY for J.K. Rowling! Not that it matters for the story, but it's nice to know.

That is so cool. Never occurred to me in a million years...

Which it occurs to me now is straight privilege and homophobia, assuming default humanity = straight. Sigh. Sorry.

Too bad Rowling didn't make it more explicit--and that other books, movies, etc, don't make it just normal to show diversity in sexual orientation among characters, not highlighting lgbt status unless it's a big issue itself (positive or negative). That would help this ongoing conversion process for so many of us....

My son came home yesterday from high school saying this was the Big Discussion of the day and everyone was agitated one way or another:

The Liberals - "What took JKR so long to out him?!"

The Conservatives - "We never liked those occult-loving books anyway."

And so it goes . . .

Dumbledore gay? But he always looks a mess. That can't be right.

It's particularly fun to read the analysis in the news... great article at Salon.com, for example.

Doorman-priest, is that your name because you'd rather be a doorman at the temple of the Lord, etc. etc. a la Psalm 84? I really like it.

Also, Doorman-priest, you are right, he is rumpled a lot.

Jan, so true... same in my daughter's school.

Mother Laura, thanks for raising the straight privilege thing too. Know what? me too... still have the head of someone who was on the team with all the power and goodies for all those years...

Love to all, and thank you for commenting.

Cecilia, I haven't yet been to Doorman Priest's place, and I thought of the psalm too when I first heard the name. But I gather from something I read at Madpriest's that he is a real doorman!

Frankly, Cecelia, I've had my suspicions about McGonigal.

Mother Laura, as a wizrd light in the loafers myself, I have to say I'm glad that JK did not make it more explicit, as the point is, the sexual orientation of any of the characters is quite irrelevant to the story line. Kind of like the way the real world should be.

Re: Doorman Priest: Mother Laura, you're half right. He's a doorman/bouncer by night, priest by day. Except that his ministry often comes into play as he assists those leaving the bars around closing time.
